Craziest Engagement Story

Being around the wedding industry as long as we have, we have seen it or should I say, heard it all. The stories that we hear are usually anything but normal. Just like every other situation in life, people are always trying to outdo the other.

Some engagements are simple. The gentleman asks the father of the bride for her hand, then takes her to dinner, and in this area to the beach to pop the question.

There have been the vacation proposals. We have heard that the question has been popped at an Island Resort, the bottom of the Grand Canyon, Niagara Falls, the Eifel tower… you get the idea.

Some of our favorites, because we are sports nuts, are the games. We have been told about the drop to one knee on the Star of the 50 yard line in Texas stadium. To the proposal in Yankee Stadium. Get your favorite band involved and you have the U2 concert, Aerosmith and my personal favorite, Phish concert (how would they remember? lol!)

An original idea is great. But what about the sentimental route. The groom who relived the first date over again. Who flew the parents in to the exotic engagement location. The guy who really proposed from his heart and soul.

I know people are crazy with the holidays coming up, but if you have an original engagement story, we would love to hear it.

Have a Great Holiday!

Jen and Christopher met on the 4th of July in 2003. Six “short” years later, after a wonderful dinner at Nicholas in Red Bank, NJ, Christopher proposed on the beach in Long Branch, NJ under the 4th of July fireworks.

However that makes it sounds easier than it was…

    The Proposal
    Who asked who ???
Unbeknownst to Jen, Christopher went on February 1st (Super Bowl Sunday) to pick out an engagement ring. The truly miraculous part to this story was that he was able to keep it a secret for 5 months! Several weeks before the big day, Christopher suggested a night out in the city on the 4th of July to watch the fireworks and celebrate their anniversary (start of Jen’s suspicions). However, Jen thwarted this first attempted with a nonchalant, “I go to the city every week, that’s a pain.” On to plan B…finding fireworks…

We had a very old gift certificate to Nicholas, a swanky restaurant near the Route 35 bridge in Red Bank. Perfect! We would go to Nicholas for dinner and watch the fireworks on the bridge. Except that the Red Bank fireworks were on Friday and we were going out on Saturday. On to plan C…

After some quick searching, we discovered that the Long Branch fireworks were on Saturday night, and clearly visible from the beach. Perfect! Christopher was all set with a plan…

On July 3rd, Christopher further exercised his scheming skills by secretly taking a ½ day from work and arranging to meet with Jen’s parents in Brooklyn. Stealing his nerves, he asked for their blessing, to which they (of course) responded yes. Now the trick was getting home in time to avoid further suspicion. Success! Christopher got home on time and no alarms were raised. He thought he was finally in the clear and ready to execute his plan when…

Jen woke up Saturday morning with a cold. Thinking it was just a morning cold, we went to the driving range for some fresh air and golf practice. Unfortunately, the cold got worse and Jen uttered the dreaded phrase, “Maybe we shouldn’t go out tonight?”

    NOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!! ~ thought Christopher.

However after some potent cold medicine, a good nap on the couch, and a hot shower, Jen was ready to go. The story doesn’t end there…

Christopher’s original suggestion of going to the city for the 4th of July and their anniversary had already peaked Jen’s suspicions. But he had been acting normal all week and especially all day, so Jen just assumed it was nothing after all. However, during dinner, sitting in a nice restaurant, sipping wine, and enjoying a night out, Jen couldn’t help herself:

“Don’t be mad at me, but I want to ask you something. I don’t want to ruin the evening and we’re having such a good time, but I have to ask (Chris starts sweating), I totally thought you were going to propose tonight…but it’s ok if you don’t.”

Chris, without missing a beat, smiles sheepishly and says, “No, I’m sorry, I’m having a great time too, and I don’t want it to ruin the evening…”

“It’s no problem, just needed to get it out there.”

    …bullet dodged…

Christopher and Jen finished their meal (ok – so maybe Jen asked a second time “Are you sure?” “Yes, I’m sorry, again”) and headed to Long Branch to watch the fireworks. After getting settled and watching the first burst of light, Chris finally came out with it…

“Now we’re going to do this my way, before you ruin it again…”

…and that’s how Jen and Christopher got engaged :-). Hope you enjoyed the story!
